Polycarbonate

What is Polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate (PC) is a strong amorphous thermoplastic. Polycarbonate’s uniqueness derives from its high light transmittance, clarity, and strength.

Advantages

Polycarbonate holds many versatile characteristics, making it a popular extrusion choice. Polycarbonate is a great choice for applications that demand high reliability and performance due to its high impact strength and resistance to fracture. If light transmittance is required, Polycarbonate is clear and transmits over 90% of light, making it a great alternative to glass.  You’ll commonly see this plastic in applications like eyeglasses and face shields given PC’s optical transparency and UV resistance. Polycarbonate can also be designed to block ultraviolet radiation.

Applications

Polycarbonate is used in a wide range of applications across many industries like automotive, construction, food, and medical. Due to its clarity and light transmittance, Polycarbonate is great for replacing traditional glass. The medical industry also uses polycarbonate due to its ability to be steam-sterilized repeatedly. Below are some examples of items using polycarbonate:

  • Lighting
  • Lenses
  • Greenhouse panels
  • Surgical instruments
  • Drug delivery systems
  • Hemodialysis membranes
  • Blood reservoirs
  • Blood filters
